100 YEARS OF INNOVATION

The future of transportation demands innovation and a pioneering spirit.
In combined transport, we have been demonstrating both since 1980.

Anniversary within our anniversary

LKW WALTER is not only celebrating its 100th birthday this year, but also 40 years of combined transport. During this time, we have made our intermodal transport network one of the strongest in Europe. With over 300 connections across Europe and more than 250 departures every day, LKW WALTER is the leader in combining road, rail and ferry transport.

Combined transport: building our Europe-wide network

In 1984, LKW WALTER carried out the first transalpine transports by rail on the north-south axis. Over the years, we have developed a dense network between the major conurbations such as northern Italy and the Ruhr area. In 2007, the first transports were carried out on the east-west axis and our network of block trains was increasingly expanded.

Andreas Ehrenhöfer, Senior Management Director at LKW WALTER, explains the continuous expansion of our network and the advantages of combined transport in detail.

The future of transportation: our green corridors

LKW WALTER is a pioneer and expert in intermodal transport and handles high transport volumes by rail. This enables us to save over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. Developments in the areas of alternative drive systems and fuels could cause this figure to grow even faster in the future. That is why we are already working on our green corridors today. Green corridors describe the combination of alternative drive systems and fuels for pre- and onward carriage and rail transport for long-distance journeys. This allows us to combine the best of both worlds.

Strong partnerships: A portrait of Container Terminal Herne

Close cooperation with partners such as container terminals and railway companies is important to ensure that combined transport delivers the best possible results for our customers. Whether it's Verona, Vienna, Herne or other important hubs in our network: partnership-based cooperation is the credo of our work so that we can achieve our goal of connecting every country in Europe. Our cooperation with Container Terminal Herne shows what such a partnership looks like:

Positive side effects of combined transport

In addition to the considerable reduction in emissions, there are several other notable advantages for customers who consider combined transport for the transport of their goods. For example, the social aspect of combined transport should not be neglected: Due to the shorter distances for drivers in the pre- and on-carriage, they not only have more family-friendly working hours, but are also utilised much more efficiently. This also counteracts the driver shortage. In addition, LKW WALTER also reduces empty kilometres by shifting to rail and, intermodal transport is a suitable means of avoiding traffic jams or road closures.

100 years of Digitalisation

Digital transformation is one of the keys to success in the next 100 years.

The future is digital

The future is digital

Companies that understand digitalisation and use the advantages for their business are actively shaping the future. LKW WALTER is such a company for its customers and transport partners and has therefore been investing in the expansion of its digital solutions for decades.

2004: Launch of CONNECT and LOADS TODAY

The transportation industry offers tremendous potential to drive forward the digital transformation for the benefit of all. With our digital solutions, we wanted to make more out of less back in 2004 and created efficiencies where they had not been before. Back then, we launched our CONNECT customer platform, a digital place that makes the organisation of transport faster, easier and more transparent. At the same time, LOADS TODAY was launched as a counterpart for our transport partners. This has made data faster and transportation more efficient.

In the year of our anniversary, however, we are not only looking to the past, but also to the here and now. We are convinced that the digital transformation that has already begun is the key to success in the next 100 years. What began at LKW WALTER 20 years ago with the launch of CONNECT and LOADS TODAY is now a competitive advantage for every customer and transport partner who can book transports, purchase loads and carry out many other activities digitally, regardless of time and location.

Where goods move, data flows

At LKW WALTER, customers, transport companies and goods are connected almost continuously. Thanks to the many digital touchpoints, such as fast price calculation through instant pricing or automatic push notifications, every flow of goods is accompanied by a data stream. With the help of Transport Monitoring, our customers follow their transport, and with the eCMR they sign the most important freight document digitally. This enables access to all important information in real time.

100 years of Transport

Since 1924 we have been shaping the transport sector. Let's celebrate yesterday and shape the future.

These were the last

These were the last
100 years

The last 100 years have shifted from groupage transport to specialisation in full truck loads, establishing LKW WALTER as a European transport organisation with a market-leading position in combined transport. What stands out then and now is the strong pioneering spirit that still characterises LKW WALTER today. You can find the whole timeline in the video below.
