New intermodal route Novi Sad - Herne: Sustainable, efficient and future-proof

LKW WALTER is expanding its network in Combined Transport with a new high-performance connection between Novi Sad (Serbia) and Herne (Germany). The route creates an efficient and sustainable transport solution between Southeast and Northern Europe, thereby specifically strengthening European supply chains. Additionally, it is the first full-train connection for flows of goods outside the European Union.

Strong connection for strong markets

Intermodal Novi Sad - Herne
With this new connection, countries like Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Türkiye will be optimally connected to markets in Germany, the Benelux countries, France, Great Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. Three round trips per week and a transit time of approximately 54 hours ensure a high frequency and planning reliability – ideal requirements for stable supply chains and a clear advantage for internationally operating companies.

Less CO₂, more efficiency

The new route consistently relies on the advantages of Combined Transport. This allows the strengths of the individual transport modes to be optimally utilized: The main route is covered by rail, partly by ship in Northern and Western Europe, while trucks handle the pre- and post-carriage. Thus, up to 79.5 percent CO₂ can be saved per transport – a clear contribution to the reduction of emissions in the supply chain. At the same time, customers benefit from year-round secured and firmly reserved capacities, an increased payload of up to 28 tons, as well as real-time shipment tracking.

Stable and future-proof

The intermodal solution minimizes risks from traffic jams, driver shortages and driving bans, thus offering a reliable and economical alternative to pure road transport. Furthermore, the concept enables efficient implementation of international transports despite current EU regulations (90/180 days), by optimally dividing pre- and onward transports.

Combined Transport has been a central component of LKW WALTER's strategy for decades. The continuous expansion of the network underscores our role as a reliable partner for sustainable and high-performance transport solutions throughout Europe.
